Agility Progression

Here is a progression of Bodhi and his agility training (Moe Strenfeld at Power Paws in San Jose). I really like the slow and go foundation ground work we are doing there. Kudos. Hopefully Bodhi will live up to my expectations!

April 16, 2007 - Jumping Around the Clock

Here is some partials of our jumping exercises. He is having to dig for the treats in the grass because it is so rough. I am noticing if I click for his rear quarters clearing the jump (without an accidental touch of the bar) he is looking up as I toss the food.

April 16, 2007 - Contact Issues

Here are the main issues. His rear doesn't stay on the board. His front feet do not necessarily go onto the ground. If I feed him with my outside hand opposite his head he is more straight but still some issues.

July 4, 2007

Demo for Albany July 4th celebration. Although Bodhi hit the tunnel with his head and spooked, he managed to do very well first time with distractions (people, dogs, etc.) I was proud of him!

Bodhi's First Agility Trial - NADAC 2007- 2008

WOW! Bodhi received compliments from people all over the place. Of course NADAC trials at WAG are always wholesome and friendly and supportive but HE WAS GREAT! I was impressed by his excitement and his dragging me to the ring (passing the open field where we play daily - his choice) He WANTED agility... He was very very happy and confident and fast. We Qualified in Jumpers (12/30) with a 2nd Place (my fault - I called him with a strong HERE - he didn't need it - and had to swing him around because he pulled off a jump), Qualified in Touch and Go (12/31) both rounds with 1st Place (the second one is video taped - he only popped off the DOGWALK but it appeared he was surprised he did it too - more work on DOGWALK!), and Qualified in Hoopers (12/31) second round with a 1st Place. Yipee. All the mistakes were handling errors or errors of green handler / green dog. He has nice OBSTACLE FOCUS, so good I didn't think he would see the TUNNEL from the JUMP in the JUMPERS run on 1/1/08 but he crossed me to get to it and had an off course BUT I consider this a great problem because he is running and taking the obstacle in front of him regardless of me : ) Good Boy!

January 13, 2008

This is Bodhi's Second Trial (NADAC). We competed in both Jumpers and Tunnelers and he qualified in both. Jumpers with a 1st Place (next highest Novice time with only a Border Collie beating him) and 2nd Place in Tunnelers (was a bit slower having to contend with more turns etc. Both YPS times were over 6 seconds...

ASCA TRIAL - Hollister - August 3, 2008

WE took a break after a few bad events to do matches. I never realized that people were biased against the breed. I feel for people who have Pit Bulls more now than ever. He would never take off after a dog BUT his excitement (aimed at me) at the finish line made people watching more than speak their mind. Well anyway, we went back to practicing with his happy go lucky finish but with a down stay until you get the leash on then tug as reinforcer at the end. These images are from the first trial we attended in a 1/2 year. It was an ASCA trial and my friend (an aussie owner) recommended I come. It was well worth it. He took 2 Qs and 1st Places in both (Gamblers and Standard run). He ran about 6 yards per second in Jumpers but dropped bars or went off course (who cares!). It was HOT! and he was fine with the weather... So back to matches again. Our goal is to do more matches at new locations then re-evaluate again before doing a trial. No more NADAC... for sure but maybe ASCA or USDAA or AKC.

EXCELLENT STANDARD (NQ): we were recording this run to see what was shutting bodhi down. On Saturday, he was barely moving and very, very nervous (like in class). He wouldn't sit on the Table for the standard run and I just ran him happily out of the ring. It was like last year all over again! It was very disconcerting. But, by run three on Saturday (FAST - I made up an easy happy course) and by Day Two (Sunday - it was raining) he was sort of back to normal.

This was the second weekend at Dixon where he sort of 'acted odd'. He was definitely better and got 2 Qs in FAST Excellent but without issue. When the leash didn't show up on the leash holder after the course he panicked and left the ring. wouldn't come back. well the fates were with me. in the gamble the bar was down so the jump requested i repeat the FAST Run and he qualified (and i was able to get him back afterwards by asking him to jump on me) - the rest of the runs were happier and less stressed.

This was a more successful show. He is coming in a bit tighter. His weave poles are excellent. No bars down in jumpers (calling him less while he is over the jump) a few off courses but not a GOB of off courses. He got one more leg in EXCELLENT A Jumpers and a few more legs in EXCELLENT B FAST (no surprises there!) and his first leg in EXCELLENT B STANDARD (and first points towards a MACH). He was 1st place in JWW, 2nd in STANDARD B, 4th in FAST... so far so good. He is a ground coverer so we always are slower because he has such distance! uuugh...

TRACS - AKC Agility Trial - December 31, 2009 - January 3, 2010

So we took about 6 months off after he bolted from the start line. This was a test to see if he wanted to do agility anymore. He appears to have recovered. From watching the videos he rather i run him from the start line or run out and then release him than walk. He runs faster. He is terribly soft and too sensitive but he is very talented none-the-less. Our goals have shifted a lot and hope to keep it that way. He is no super star but he is all i have right now so i should work with it. Thanks to Silvia Trkman for all her wonderful advise.

Sheltland Sheepdog of Northern California - April 3-4, 2010 - Santa Rosa

Bodhi was 'on fire' beating the usual suspects (the 'Pat' Goldens and Brody the Border Collie both days in Standard and coming in 2nd place (amazing) in JWW on day 2... quite unexpected. We got our MX and MXJ titles this weekend and would have had our MXF title had i not been in the wrong position for the send on the gamble ... all in all a great weekend.
